Sharp injuries among oral medical staff and standardized prevention countermeasures

OBJECTIVE To investigate the sharp injuries among the oral medical staff so as to provide scientific evidence for making standardized protection strategies for the sharp injuries among the oral medical staff.METHODS By means of the self-designed questionnaire on sharp injuries,30.0% of the oral medical staff were investigated according to the job categories.The main contents of the survey included the general information of respondents,training participation,the exposure sources,and reporting after the sharp injuries.RESULTS Of 169 questionnaires distributed,167 were valid with the effective rate of 98.8%.85.7% of the doctors participated the training;the incidence of the sharp injuries was the highest in the nurses (77.3%);more than 50.0% of the exposure sources to contaminated sharp injuries were unknown;77.3% of respondents could properly treat the local injuries;only 23.6% of the injured respondents reported their sharp injuries.Among the causes of the missing of report,the respondents who answered not necessary,or not clear of the reporting procedure accounted for about 50.0%.CONCLUSION The incidence rate of the sharp injuries is high in the medical staff,while the report rate is low.Most of the exposure sources to the contaminated sharp injuries are unknown,thus it is necessary for the infection control department to put forward the targeted and standardized prevention strategies.
