Empyema and Effusions

Surgeons are frequently asked to evaluate and manage patients with pleural fluid collections. The clinical presentations and etiologies of pleural effusions can be a result of localized pleural disease or manifestations of systemic disease. This chapter reviews the anatomy and physiology of the pleural space, diagnostic techniques utilized in categorizing the pleural fluid, and the currently recommended therapeutic approaches for managing acute pleural effusion.
