Seasonal Fluctuation of Aedes albopictus in A Town of Foshan City,Guangdong Province

2010
Objective This study was designed to investigate the seasonal fluctuation of Aedes albopictus in a town of Foshan city and to provide some basic data for the prevention and control of dengue fever in local place. Methods A cycle of 4-day trapping of adult mosquito with trapping containers as well as oviposition trapping were used to estimate the seasonal fluctuation of the density of Aedes albopictus. Results A total of 282 adult mosquitoes were captured in four individual studies, including 161 adult mosquito and 5 954 mosquito eggs, between the autumn of 2008 to summer of 2009. A significant difference in the density of mosquitoes was observed, mosquito and oviposition positive index (MOI) (χ2=52.172,P 0.000); mosquito-trap positive index (MI) (χ2=47.664,P 0.000); oviposition index (OI) (χ2 =44.525,P 0.000); mosquito-trap density index (MDI) (F =17.448,P 0.000); egg density index (EDI) (F =13.454,P 0.000). Conclusion Both the positive indices and density indices of local Aedes albopictus in the summer and autumn were significantly higher than those in the winter and spring. The density of mosquitoes reached the peak in late summer and early autumn. Results obtained from the present study are in agreement the traditional surveillance indices.
