Anterior Bony Ankle Impingement

2016
In this chapter, we discuss the history, etiology, physical examination, imaging, treatment, and outcome of anterior ankle impingement syndrome. This syndrome is a relatively common problem in athletes and active patients. The formation of intracapsular bone spurs causes the soft tissue to be squeezed in dorsiflexion, causing pain and limitation. Clinical examination is straightforward by recognizable pain on palpation, and by means of a medial impingement view, the diagnosis can most often be confirmed. Arthroscopic resection of the bone spurs is discussed, and the (long-term) outcome and return to sport after treatment are eluded.
