Diarrhoea in childhood is extremely common and represents a considerable burden to health care. In this article, Morris Gordon discusses the distinction between acute and chronic diarrhoea. Different diagnostic pathways are considered and appropriate treatment modalities are laid out, with due consideration of the unique challenges offered by children and young patients. Finally, some rare yet important causes of diarrhoea are considered.
