Event Flow Measurements in Remote Tropical Watersheds in the Philippines: the Need for Automated Weather-proof Devices

2020
This paper discusses the measurement of river flow during typhoon events using available equipment such as propeller-type current meter and the pressure-type depth gauge used by Mapua FRAMER Project. Alternative improvised approach is also discussed. It highlights the difficulty and the hazard accompanied by the methods and hence, the need to utilize technologies available is recommended. For the case of tropical Philippines, these technologies should be weather-proof and reliable, aside from being affordable for deployment in remote places. Recording and automated devices are also necessary features particularly for remote hardly accessible areas.
