Progress and Perspectives in the Chemotherapy of Epithelial Solid Tumors

Major progress has been achieved in the curative treatment of the hematological malignancies, the childhood solid tumors, and in testis cancer [1–3]. These tumors comprise 10% of all cancers. The majority of tumors are epithelial solid tumors which occur in patients over 50 and include breast, bowel, lung cancer, head and neck, and selected genitourinary and gynecologic cancers. Cancer is the second cause of death in the US, after cardiovascular disease, and constitutes a major public health burden.
