2014
We have previously shown the beneficial effect of psychoanalytical treatment to patients affected by neuromuscular disorders and family members, in the Psychoanalysis Clinic, Human Genome Center at the University of Sao Paulo. However, weekly session’s attendance, which is required for a better outcome, may be very difficult for patients with reduced mobility. Socio-economic difficulties and lack of accessibility in public transportation system in developing countries represent a great obstacle, impeding frequently the displacement of physically handicapped patients. In an attempt to circumvent this problem we have decided to replace traditional psychoanalytical setting, which requires the physical presence and to attend these patients mostly through videoconference (Skype). Six patients have been treated with this approach until now: four males and two females, aged 17–45 years-old. In order to verify the extent to which they would benefit from the treatment these patients were first personally interviewed by a psychoanalyst (JF) in the presence of a geneticist (MZ). They were then followed weekly for 15 sessions, through Skype, by another psychoanalyst of the group, who created supplementary techniques in an attempt to replace the physical presence. In some cases, face-to-face sessions also occurred. After 15 weeks, the patients returned to the clinic for a personal interview (with JF and MZ) with the aim to verify the extent to which they actually benefited from treatment. Each case was discussed with the whole team to evaluate the results as well as the pros and cons of this alternative treatment as well as decisions on continuing or interrupting it. In order to better evaluate the outcome of this approach it will be extended to a larger group of patients.
