Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

2020
Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in plantar fasciitis. Materials and Methods: This study included 42 female and 14 male patients who were admitted to our hospital between 01.09.2018-30.12.2018 and diagnosed as chronic plantar fasciitis. The demographic findings of the patients were recorded. Five sessions of ESWT were performed at three-day intervals. The symptom levels of the patients were determined using the Visual Analogue Scale (0-10); Pain, activity and disability levels were questioned using Foot Functional Index (FAI). Evaluations were repeated before and after treatment. Results: Symptom level of the patients included in the study; There was a statistically significant improvement in pain, activity and disability scores after treatment (all p 0.05), ( r = 0.03, p> 0.05). Conclusion: ESWT is symptomatic and functionally effective in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. ESWT, which is a non-invasive treatment method, can be used in patients who do not benefit from conservative treatment for plantar fasciitis.
