Effects of CT and magnetic resonance imaging on diagnosi of central nervous system infections in children

OBJECTIVE To explore the clinical effects of CT and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)on diagnosis of central nervous system infections.METHODS A total of 45 patients with central nervous system infections who were treated in the hospital from Feb 2010 to Feb 2014 were enrolled in the study,the patients who underwent CT and MRI in the same time period(no more than 6hours)were assigned as the study group,45 patients for whom the blood culture of pathogens and the cerebrospinal fluid smear were performed at the admission to the hospital were chosen as the control group;the data of CT and MRI of the observation group were compared with the results of the control group.RESULTS The accordance rate of the CT examination was 53.3%,the MRI examination84.4%,there was statistically significant difference in the accordance rate between the CT and MRI(P<0.05).The CT examination showed that the positive rates of the viruses,bacteria,and other causes of diseases were66.7%,20.8%,and 12.5%,respectively;the MRI examination indicated that the positive rates of the viruses,bacteria,and other causes of diseases were 39.5%,34.2%,and 26.3%,respectively,there was statistically significant difference in the diagnosis of infections induced by the viruses,bacteria,or other causes between CT and MRI(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS The MRI shows higher positive rate in diagnosis of central nervous system infections than CT,however,CT shows significantly higher positive rate in diagnosis of the infections induced by the viruses than MRI,and MRI shows significantly higher positive rate in diagnosis of the infections included by bacteria or other causes than CT.The CT in combination with MRI may effectively improve the clinical diagnosis of central nervous system infections,it is worthy to be promoted in the hospital.
