African-American Pediatric Pain Patient

2019
This chapter contains a case study on an African-American child who presents to a pediatric emergency department with burns. The child has boiling water burns to 25% of his body, and the first- and second-degree burns and related pain are overlooked in the triage process. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the enactments of unintentional, unconscious racial bias by clinicians during the provision of care.
