Fracture Liaison Service: US Perspective

2019
Abstract The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) model of care is critical to improving postfracture care in the United States of America and is the solution to narrowing the postfracture medical care osteoporosis care gap. In this chapter, factors leading to the FLS movement are described. The Kaiser Healthy Bones programme and Geisinger High-Risk Osteoporosis Clinic programme are summarised in detail, followed by a description of other programmes such as ‘Own the Bone’ and orthopaedic-led models of postfracture care. Osteoporosis care gaps are addressed, as are FLS database/registries and quality reporting measures. Importantly, no ‘one size fits all’ model exists as postfracture care is provided in open, closed and ‘hybrid’ systems of care. The chapter concludes by encouraging existing FLS programmes to report benchmarking metrics, track performance and learn from the experiences and activities of others.
