The evolving potential of precision medicine in the management of autoimmune liver disease

2021
Abstract Autoimmune liver disease (ALD), as well as liver disease in general, continues to increase worldwide resulting in significant patient morbidity as well as increased health costs of treatment and management. Early recognition is ideal, but initial stages may be asymptomatic or mild, disease presentation heterogeneous, and both progression and severity can be hard to predict. Precision medicine offers the potential to identify at-risk individuals earlier and more accurately stratify patients for more effective and individually targeted management. In this chapter we will review the history, clinical features, diagnosis, challenges, and potential utility of PM for improving care of individuals with ALD.
