Performances of some SiPM models for cryogenic applications

2017
Abstract Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are semiconductor-based photodetectors with performance similar to the traditional Photomultiplier Tubes. We present a comparison between the performance at cryogenic temperatures of some models of SiPM manufactured by AdvanSiD, SensL and Hamamatsu, in terms of breakdown voltages, gain, noise and pulse shape. We used a cold head to scan temperatures from 87 K up to 300 K, focusing the measurements at the temperature of liquid argon (87 K) and liquid xenon (165 K), which are scintillating media which find use in several neutrino and Dark Matter physics experiments.
