Thyroid disease indiabetics

Summary Amongadiabetic clinic population of5,000 there were113patients (141%) withconcurrent clinical thyroid dysfunction (56hyperthyroid, 57hypothyroid). Seventy-one (62.8%) ofthese patients were insulin-dependent anddiabetes preceded thyroid diseasein85(75-2%). Twenty patients weregiven carbimazole fortwoormoreyears andofthese 15 (75%) relapsed, apercentage notsignificantly differentfromthat seeninnon-diabetic patients. Thevalue ofscreening diabetic patients forevidence ofthyroid dysfunction isdiscussed.
