Effect of excessive zinc intake on anti-oxidative and immunological profiles in cockerels

2016
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of excess zinc on anti-oxidative and immunological parameters in cockerels. A total of 80 male White Leg Horn male birds of 4 weeks of age were randomly and equally divided into four groups (C, G1, G2 and G3) of 20 birds each. Zinc sulphate was incorporated in drinking water at15000ppm, 25000ppm and 35000ppm to group G1, G2 and G3 respectively, for a period of 12 weeks. Four slaughters were carried out on 20, 40, 60 and 90th day of the study. The findings of anti-oxidative profiles in erythrocytes and other tissues revealed a significant increase in lipid peroxidase, while glutathione peroxidase was significantly reduced in all experimental birds. A significant decrease in serum immunoglobulin and delayed hypersensitivity was observed in all the experimental birds as compared to control. The results showed that excessive intake of zinc has an adverse effect on immune and antioxidative defense systems of birds.
