Follow-up Study of Splinting for Pollux Rigidus

From 1981 to 1988, sixty-seven cases (eighty-two thumbs) of pollux rigidus were treated with the splint, and were followed at Fukuoka Children's Hospital and Medical Center. An average follow-up period was 24 months.The results were as follows.1. Flexion contracture of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb had diminished within three months in sixty-nine (71%) of them.2. Seventy-one thumbs (93%) were free from flexion contracture at the time of follow-up.We concluded that the splinting in extension is very effective for pollux rigidus in children.
