2010
Captures with black and white modified Shannon traps were undertaken to identify aspects of the behavior of the two cryptic species implicated as vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis, Nyssomyia intermedia and Ny. neivai, in an area of sympatric occurrence. The traps were installed side by side, monthly, from July 2001 to June 2002, 18.00–07.00 hours, in a peridomicile in the Serra district, Iporanga municipality, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, close to the reserve of the Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira. A total of 2,142 specimens were captured, Ny. intermedia (47.4%) and Ny. neivai (50.5%) The white trap was more attractive to both sexes of both species (p 0.05. The majority of the specimens (70%) of both species were captured between 18.00 h. and 00.00 h. Females of Ny. intermedia presented high peaks at 19.00-20.00 h. and 22.00-23.00 h., and those of Ny. neivai at 20.00-21.00 h. The highest hourly average for females of Ny. intermedia on the black trap occurred in the winter and that for males in the summer. For Ny. neivai, males and females predominated in the summer. On the white trap both sexes of both species were most attracted in the summer, with a more conspicuous difference for the males than for the females. Three other anthropophilic species, Pintomyia fischeri, Migonemyia migonei and Lutzomyia longipalpis, were also captured, but Ny. intermedia and Ny. neivai were probably transmitting the cutaneous leishmaniasis in the area due to their great predominance despite their apparent competitiveness.
