Test of a Full Scale Concentrically Braced Frame with Multi-Story X-Bracing
2008
This paper summarizes the results of a full scale, 2-story braced frame test that was performed at the NCREE Laboratory in Taiwan as part of a small group NEES research project, NSF CMS 0619161, NEESR-SG International Hybrid Simulation of Tomorrow's Braced Frames, on concentrically braced frames. This is the first in a series of four large-scale tests that will be performed in Taiwan. The first test specimen is a full scale, 2-story, single bay braced frame in a multi-story X-brace configuration. The test has several goals. It will provide a first experimental examination of the multi-story X-brace system and of the midspan gusset plate connections. It will serve as a basis for calibrating nonlinear analytical models of braced frame behavior under development as part of the research. At the same time, it is a confirmation study for past research on corner gusset plate connections performed at the University of Washington. If conditions permit, the frame will be used for a second test with wide flange braces. Details, data and photos of the test frame during construction, preparation and testing are provided on the NCREE website: http://exp.ncree.org/cbf/. This paper was written immediately after completion of the test on December 11, 2007 and includes a summary of the design and analysis of the frame and the initial test results.
