Evaluation of optic nerve with visual evoked potential in patients with ocular contusion

2003
Objective To study the characteristics of visual evoked potential(VEP) in patients with ocular contusion. Methods VEP examinations were conducted in 115 eyes of 71 patients with ocular contusion.Pattern-VEP(P-VEP) examinations were performed in 100 eyes with visual acuity better than 0.1(group A),and Flash-VEP(F-VEP) in 15 eyes with vision lower than 0.1(group B).All eyes in grop A were divided into three subgroups according to present vision consequently. Results There was a significant reduction in amplitude of P 100 in group A compared with normal value( P 0.01),and no change in P 100 latency( P 0.05).There was a significant difference in amplitudes of P 100 in three subgroups in group A ( P 0.01).P 100 latency and amplitudes of P 100 significantly delayed and decreased respectively in contusion eyes in group B compared with the other healthy eyes( P 0.01). Conclusion The use of VEP is an abstract Objective and sensitive method in diagnosing the status of optic nerve damage following ocular contusion, and also has a quantitative value.
