Endometriosis: the 'disease of theories'

Endometriosis is a chronic and often progressive condition that affects women during their reproductive years. In the condition, the endometrial cells that normally grow inside the womb are found outside it in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the lining of the pelvic cavity and the outer surface of the womb, or in the bowel near the womb. Endometriosis can also occur in the vagina or around old scar tissue.
