Effect of drug combined with endoscopic treatment for esophagogastric variceal rebleeding in hepatic cirrhosis

2011
Objective To observe the curative effect of drug(propranolol) combined with endoscopic(ligation and tissue glue) treatment for preventing of esophagogastric variceal rebleeding in hepatic cirrhosis. Methods Sixty-five patients that esophagogastric variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension had stopped by medications were randomly divided into treatment group(n=34) and control group(n=31).The patients in treatment group were treated with propranolol and endoscopic therapy, whereas the patients in control group were treated just with propranolol.Follow-up of 12 months after treatment, all patients in two groups were investigated with the rate of rebleeding and mortality. Results In treatment group, there were seven cases with rebleeding and three cases with mortality.Meanwhile, there were ten cases with rebleeding and three cases with mortality in control group.Compared with control group, the rate of rebleeding was lower in treatment group(20.6% vs 32.3%,P0.05).However,it was no difference in the rate of mortality between two groups(8.8% vs 9.7%,P0.05).Conclusion Drug combined with endoscopic treatment can effectively prevent esophagogastric variceal rebleeding in hepatic cirrhosis. It can improve their quality of life and be worth promoting in clinical practices.
