A GLANCE FROM MRI UNIT: REVIEW OF THE SCANS PERFORMED DURING ONE YEAR MRG ÜNİTESİNDEN BİR BAKIŞ: BİR YIL BOYUNCA ÇEKİLEN GÖRÜNTÜLERİN GÖZDEN GEÇİRİLMESİ

2014
It was aimed to document the MRIs performed during one year in MRI unit of our education and research hospital and to analyze which MRIs are more frequently requested by which clinics in order to determine the actual needs of different clinics for MRI and also the need for the specialized radiologists in MRI units.Magnetic resonance imagings performed between January 1 2010 and December 31 2010 in our MRI unit were retrospectively documented by using picture archieving and communication system (PACS). The anatomic site of examination, referring clinics and number of patients were recorded. We calculated the total number of MRIs performed in year 2010. MRIs were classified according to the anatomic site of examination and referring clinics. The number of MRIs in each group was calculated. Results were expressed as numbers and percentages.32444 MRI examinations were performed in 2010 in our MR unit. According to the referring clinics, neurosurgery requested 25.9% of total MRIs performed in that year, followed by neurology with 20.0%, orthopaedics with 17.4% and physical medicine and rehabilitation with 10.7%. According to imaging site, the majority of the films were neuroradiological MRIs (64.4% of total requests), musculoskeletal (%24.9) and abdominal MRI (4.3%) examinations. When comparing the number of MRI requests with the total number of patients examined in that year by each clinics, it was seen that neurosurgery requested MRIs in 36.7% , neurology in 22.3%, orthopaedics in 9.9% and physical medicine and rehabilitation in 15.9% of the patients they examined. Among MRIs, most commonly requested MRI were the lumbar MRI (24.0%), the brain MRI (20,1%), and the knee MRI (12.1%).Majority of the scans were neuroradiological, musculoskelet al and abdominal MRIs. Therefore we assume that the most needed subspecialties in MRI units are neuroradiology, musculoskeletal radiology and abdominal radiology. Besides, since most of the MRIs are requested by neurosurgeons, neurologs, orthopaedists and physiatrists, close relation of radiologists
