p3m:A KernelSpaceToolforMultimedia StreamMonitoring

2007
Withthedevelopment ofthebroadband Internet, heterogeneous multimedia service or protocols have beenwidely deployed, however, to monitortheir Quality ofService (QoS) hasbecome an important job. There are twotraditional strategies. one isserverbasedQoS monitordepending on thespecific multimedia server, such as Helix. Another istcpdumpbased, forexample mmdump, which can measure the natureofmultimedia traffic merely. Thesetools both workinthe userspace, which will reduce theefficiency. Atpresent, we presentp3m (Portable MultiMedia Monitor), a portable multimedia QoSmonitortool, which parses andanalyzes thestreampacket inthe kernel space.Thep3misserver-independent andcan monitor themultimedia packets ofinterest foroptional storage, thusgreatly reducing resourcerequirements. This paper describes thedesign andimplementation of p3m anddemonstrates one instance ofitsutility in monitoring theQoSofRTSPwithHelix Server.
