Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae: Neglected Problem: a Case Report

2016
Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae(LSTVs) is a common within the spine, and their association with low backpain has been debated in the literature for nearly a century. It affects 4-8% of the population. LSTVs are congenital spinalanomalies defined as either sacralization of the lowest lumbar segment or lumbarization of the most superior sacralsegment of the spine. These anomalies are usually identified incidentally because CT is not typically indicated solely toidentify LSTVs, due to radiation concerns, nor is it the preferred imaging technique used to evaluate patients withnontraumatic low back pain.Correct identification of an LSTV is essential because there are important clinicalimplications. Inaccurate identification may lead to surgical and procedural errors and poor correlation with clinicalsymptoms.
