Plasma red-ox status in β-thalassemic subjects

A clear correlation was found between thalassaemia and oxidative stress. In this study, albumin, bilirubin, uric acid, vitamins E and C, b-carotene and protein-bound SH groups were evaluated in 33 thalassaemic patients and 33 normal control subjects. The Total Radical-Trapping Antioxidant Parameter (TRAP) was calculated using a mathematical formula (TRAPc) and directly measured by a fluorescence-based method (TRAPm). An alteration in the plasma antioxidant status was found in β-thalassaemic subjects.
