Lipids metabolism disorders are directly related to atherogenesis and those with genetic causes constitute an important group due to their high prevalence and difficult therapeutic treatment. There exist evidences regarding the participation of oxidative stress in angiogenesis and vascular remodeling, as well as in the direct damage caused to vascular structures during atherogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the basal and oxidative DNA damage and its repair capacity in the presence of an oxidizing agent, in a group of patients having primary hyperlipoproteinemias. Six patients from the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital Lipids Clinic diagnosed as having genetic cause hyperlipoproteinemia were studied. The alkaline Comet assay was used to evaluate the basal DNA damage; the oxidative damage and the repair damage capacity induced by hydrogen peroxide were evaluated through kinetic studies. No differences were found in DNA basal and oxidative damage between patients and controls. Patients showed less DNA repair capacity than controls. Among patients having familial hypercholesterolemia 75 % of them had low repair capacity with values below 25 percentile. All patients having mixed dyslipidemia were considered to be normal repairers. Disorders in repair mechanisms might be related to the clinical evolution and severity of complications in patients having familial hypercholesterolemia.
