Disposal of radioactive wastes from the Finnish nuclear power plants

1994
The first facility for ultimate disposal of nuclear waste in Finland was opened in May 1992. The repository will accommodate all the wastes from the operation of the TVO I and TVO II reactors at Olkiluoto and can be later expanded to accept the wastes from the decommissioning of these reactors as well. Excavations for a repository for low- and medium-level operating waste from the Loviisa nuclear power plant were started in February 1993. Detailed site investigations are under way for the final repository for spent nuclear fuel. This repository will accommodate the spent fuel from the Olkiluoto reactors; the spent fuel from the Loviisa reactors is returned to Russia
