Abstract Physicians spend years of their life studying and training to have a successful career and steady income, but spend precious little time learning how to effectively protect the income they have worked so hard to obtain. This deficiency, coupled with rising educational debt and decreased reimbursement, has led to poor financial choices, increased stress, and rising levels of burnout. 1 , 2 This review will examine several common financial decisions physicians and surgeons encounter, general guidelines for successful financial practices and planning, and common pitfalls to avoid.
