PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery having excellent cycle characteristics and charge/discharge capacity at high potential, and also to provide the lithium ion secondary battery.SOLUTION: A positive electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery includes: a current collector; a positive electrode active material layer which is formed on the surface of the current collector and contains a positive electrode active material and a binder; and a coating layer which is formed in at least a part of the surface of the positive electrode active material layer and whose specific resistance is larger than 1.0×10Ωcm and 1.0×10Ωcm or less.
