The Pathological Anatomy of Digital Enucleation for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and its Application to Endoscopic Resection

Summary— A detailed study of the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the prostate enlarged by benign hyperplasia and of the effects fo enucleation is presented; based on this study in the cadaver, some aspects fo endoscopic resection are described. The study and its findings are described in Part I and in Part II some aspects of endoscopic resection are dealt with as 3 questions: questions: (1) Do technical considerations allow resection of the whole adenoma without encroachment on the shell? (2) Is it desirable and feasible to attempt the resection of the glandular tissue of the shell? (3) May resection impair continence even though injury has not been caused by the cutting loop? The discussion is concerned with 3 subjects: the morphology of the prostate, the prostatic capsule and the sphincter system.
