Anestesia para cirugía bariátrica

2005
Obesity is a major health problem worldwide and has reached epidemic proportions in the western society. We don't know the magnitude of this problem in Colombia, but it is increasing and for this reason the increment of bariatric surgery. The purpose of this study is to describe the demographic and clinic characteristics, the type of surgery and the complications in patients subjected to bariatric surgery. This is a descriptive and retrospective study, made at Clinica Universitaria Bolivariana which shows the data of all patients subjected to bariatric surgery, during the period 2003 - 2004. The patients received a standard management protocol for the surgery. Of 32 patients 68.75% were women, the average age was 36 years, weight 118 Kg and body mass index 43.3 65.6% of the patients were subjected to gastric bypass with an average duration 198 minutes. 84.4% of the patients were ASA II and the principal comorbilities were acid peptic disease, arterial hypertension and degenerative arthritis. Two patients presented complications, one laringoespasmo and acute pulmonary edema and the other patient anemia. 78% of the patients recovered in the hospitalization place with an average stay days of 2.2 days. The scientific evidence of this study do not permit to establish the optimal anesthetic technique. However, the clinical results of the patients subjected to bariatric surgery at the Clinica Universitaria Bolivariana, could suggest that our anesthetic protocol can be used in bariatric surgery due to the low rate of complications found.
