Closed Injuries: Bone, Ligament, and Tendon

2015
Since the fingertip is the primary sensory and prehensile interface between the human brain and the outside environment, injuries in this area are the ones most commonly seen in an emergency setting. Closed injuries to the fingertip are all too commonly underestimated by treating clinicians and are therefore undertreated. Undiagnosed injuries can lead to long-term complications and disability. These may include tip deformity , dysesthesis, pain, nail deformities, distal interphalangeal (DIP) angular deformity, loss of active motion, fibrous stiffness, or osteoarthritis (OA).
