Importance of reservoirs for rest and sports

1971
1. In recent decades there has been created in many countries in the world, including the USSR, many reservoirs, the majority of which are multipurpose. Many of them, especially those located near large cities, are of great importance for recreation. Their shores are now being used to build children's health institutions. Tens of millions of people vacation and engage in sports on the reservoirs. 2. Diverse planning-research and preparatory work is required to determine ways of effective utilization of multipurpose reservoir for recreation. The recreational possibilities of reservoirs must be taken into account in working out and implementing basic principles of the use of water resources. Reservoirs, like other water bodies. can be utilized for recreation only if pollution control measures are enforced. 3. It is necessary to master modern recreational use of reservoirs and to work out ways of expanding and improving their use. The possibility of partial recreational use (fishing, sailing) of special purpose reservoirs must be investigated. 4. Further improvement of the recreational use of reservoirs requires broad execution of scientific-research work, the main part of which must be the study and adaptation of foreign experience. Geographers, economists, biologists, and engineers must take part in this work.
