REDESIGN OF THE VENTED VESSEL
1961
Abstract : Design changes in the vented vessel, a laboratory device used in the study of propellant burning rates are described. The new design permits the use of different igniter cartridge sizes and different combustion chamber sizes, yet it is lighter in weight and shorter in over-all length. It incorporates the principle of radial ignition, is equipped with nickel-on-copper base nozzle inserts, can be converted to a closed bomb device, and is provided with a mount for recording thrust measurements. A high-pressure rupture-disk assembly is an added safety feature. The body of the vented vessel is constructed of high-strength, temperature-resistant, nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel to increase its operational temperature and pressure ranges. (Author)
