Apparatus for preparing a foam having a controlled size distribution of gas bubbles (8) in a liquid matrix, comprising: a porous membrane (6) having a pore size and a distance between controlled pore to produce a distribution substantially uniform size of the gas bubbles (8); a pumping device for directing a gas flow of gas into and through the porous membrane (6) to form gas bubbles (8); and a pumping fluid to direct a flow of liquid matrix to pass through the porous membrane (6) and detach, collect, accumulate and drag the gas bubbles (8) in the liquid matrix to form a foam with bubbles gas (8) of a generally uniform size and size distribution of gas bubbles substantially uniform, wherein the porous membrane (8) is formed in a cylindrical shape and further comprises a housing (17) including a wall having a configured and dimensioned to be adjacent the porous membrane cylinder to form a narrow space (7) of a constant or variable width between 0.1 to 10 millimeters between the porous membrane cylinder and the wall surface of the casing surface.
