Synthesis and magnetism of copper(II)-lanthanide(III) heterometal binuclear complexes with N,N′-bis(2-aminoethyl)oxamidocopper(II)

1994
Abstract Six novel μ-oxamido heterometal binuclear complexes have been synthesized and characterized, namely Cu(oxae)Ln(L) 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 , where oxae denotes the N,N′-bis(2-aminoethyl) oxamido dianion, L. denotes 1,10-phenanthroline (abbreviated as phen) and Ln represents Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho or Er. The magnetic susceptibility of Cu(oxae)Gd(phen) 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 was measured over the range 4–300 K and the observed data were successfully simulated by an equation based on the spin Hamiltonian operator ( Ĥ = −2JŜ 1 · Ŝ 2 ), giving the exchange integral J (CuGd) = −0.62 cm −1 . This indicates a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the copper(II) and godolinium(III) ions.
