access was obtained, the scanning fiber endoscope was advanced into the bile duct and images were obtained. Scanning fiber endoscopy is a novel platform for endoscopic imaging with improved resolution. A pancreatic duct endoscope is already available for testing in human subjects and currently in design are models with tip deflection, fluorescence imaging and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, as well as novel devices for directed curettage and brushing. Importantly, scanning fiber endoscopy as a platform brings much needed new tools to bear on the question of benign versus malignant biliary strictures.
