Modeling of Cryogenic Fracturing Processes

2018
Abstract Cryogenic fracturing is a new fracturing concept that uses cryogenic fluids as fracturing fluids. Its mechanism rests on the effect of a thermal shock introduced by a cryogen on the hot surface of a reservoir rock. The thermomechanical properties of the rock and failure criteria play very important roles during the cryogenic fracturing process. Modeling cryogenic fracturing process requires combining all of these processes and finally simulates them. The experimental process of cryogenic fluid treatment on rock samples is simulated. Results from simulation are matched with the actual experiment results for temperature, pressure, and fracture profiles.
