Autologous serum in the treatment of severe corneal epithelial shedding after cataract surgery

2013
Objective To investigate the effect of autologous serum in the treatment of severe corneal epithelial shedding after cataract surgery. Methods 60 patients with severe corneal epithelial shedding after small incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction plus intraocular lens implantion were randomly divided into two groups.Autologous serum group received subconjunctival injections of autologous serum, autologous serum eye drops, and dextran and hypromellose eye drops four times daily; while the control group received dextran and dypromellose eye drops alone. The average healing time of the corneal epithelium was measured. Results The average healing time of the corneal epithelium was significantly shorter in the autologous serum group than in the control group ([12.90 ± 1.89]days vs.[26.00 ± 2.40]days,P<0.01).Conclusions Autologous serum is efficacious in the treatment of severe corneal epithelial shedding after cataract surgery.
