A panoramic view on the phytochemical, nutritional and therapeutic value of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.: A comprehensive review.

Background Medicinal plants are sources of novel medicinal agents widely used as a remedy for various ailments. Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. having nutritive and medicinal value due to the presence of numerous bioactive natural products such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, alkaloids, saponin, flavonoids, terpenoids, pectin, triterpenoic acids, and lipids. Chief active Jujubosides (sapogenin) and cyclopeptide alkaloids responsible for various types of therapeutic potential such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, anticonvulsant, diuretic, cardiotonic, immunostimulant, wound healing, analgesic, and antimicrobial effects, etc. Objective: This review aims to compile the phytochemical, pharmacological and nutritional importance of the same plant. Method The current review reports an account of a unique summary of Ziziphus mauritiana based on searching the databases from Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, Science Direct and Springer sources and research gate. Result As the search for novel drugs from botanical sources continues, there is a need for future investigations to isolate and characterize pharmacologically active agents that confer medicinal properties on Ziziphus mauritiana, as well as to elucidate the structures of these agents to explore their healing properties. Conclusion Utilization of Indian jujube appears promising its possible uses for human health with significant pharmacological activities along with the nutritional value. Further exploratory studies are required to scientifically validate the existing traditional practices in relation to its health benefits.
