Bogota Bag Application for Temporary Abdominal Closure

Aim: Several techniques have been described in literature for temporary abdominal closure. In this retrospective study we evaluated efficiency of Bogota Bag application for temporary abdominal closure and factors that influence mortality. Material and Method: File records of patients who have been applicated Bogota Bag during surgery in Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine General Surgery Department were retrospectively reviewed. Results:76 patients underwent Bogota Bag application for temporary abdominal closure. Patients were operated 1-23 times (mean number 5,75). Mean open abdomen time was 25,01 days (1-121 days). Bogota Bag application indications were intraabdominal sepsis in 56 patients (73,7%), mesenteric vascular disease in 7 (9,2%) patients, packing in 5 (6,6%) patients, gastrointestinal bleeding in 5 (6,6%) patients, plan for second look operation in 3 (3,9%) patients. Primary facial closure was performed to 73% of patients. In remained patients wound healing left to secondary closure. Overall mortality rate was 51,3% (39 patients). In univariant analysis advanced age (≥65), higher APACHE II score, presence of cardiac insufficiency, presence of renal failure, presence of two or more multiorgan insufficiency were found to be associated with mortality. In multivariant analysis only cardiac insufficiency was found to be associated with mortality. Discussion: Bogota Bag application for temporary abdominal closure is easy, inexpensive and effective method. This patient group have high mortality rate and presence of cardiac insufficiency is most important factor associated wtih mortality .
