Pediatric Residents’ Perspective on Residency Education and Role of the EHR in Addressing Tobacco Smoke Exposure

Purpose Tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) causes significant health risks to children. Pediatricians should address TSE with patients and families, but may not be effectively trained to do so. A 2011 survey of pediatric residency Program Directors (PDs) found that only 65% of those surveyed included tobacco prevention in their curricula, and the majority of curricula had little emphasis on interactive or experiential learning.
