We present two experiments to compare laparoscopic to conventional oncological surgery regarding short-term aspects (stress and immune alteration). Material and Methods: We established two syngenec tumor bearing small animal models for colon resection (BSp73 ASML, BDX rats) and liver resection (Morris hepatoma 3924A, ACI rats). The following parameters of the stress and immune system were measured: corticosterone, neopterine, IL-1s, IL-6 and the body weight as a parameter of postoperative recovery. Results: After colon resection the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant differences in all short-term parameters, including body weight after laparoscopic versus conventional colon resection (p < 0.05). In the case of liver resection only IL-6 showed significant differences (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that the type of intraabdominal operation (colon or liver) may influence the trauma of an operation more than the type of technique (laparoscopic or open).
