Epigenetic modulation during pregnancy and pregnancy related disorders

2021
Abstract Perhaps, pregnancy is the most critical stage of human growth and development. Pathological perturbation in this period can profoundly affect the fetal wellbeing and increases susceptibility to chronic diseases later in life. The placenta is the vital organ that connects fetus to maternal circulation and so of paramount importance, not only for the health of the fetus, but also for the health of the mother. Abnormal placental function has been attributed to pregnancy-related diseases, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and miscarriage. Recent years, role of epigenetic mechanisms in pathogenesis of pregnancy disorders was bolded. Here, we provide an overview of epigenetic regulation mechanisms in placental function and their contributions to pathology of pregnancy complications.
