REVIEW ARTICLE INSULIN RESISTANCE SYNDROME IN PAEDIATRIC OBESITY

2012
Insulin resistance syndrome (IRS), comprises some of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Despite no standardized and universal definition for paediatric IRS being available, the presence of cardiovascular risk factors at early ages and their reverberations into adult life has spurred on research on children and adolescents. Interest for early onset IRS increased under the pressure of the looming childhood obesity epidemic coupled with rising type-2 diabetes mellitus rates in young people and IRS rates in adults. Childhood and adolescent obesity entails the same risks and comorbidities and adult obesity, adding up to a major global public health issue. Promptly identifying childhood IRS components may help stave off permanent lesions and chronic illness in later life.
