Stem Cell-Based Approaches for Treatment of Glioblastoma

2017
The discovery of stem cells has revolutionized our understanding of animal physiology. In the past decade, stem cells have been employed as therapeutic tools for various diseases, including diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and most common malignant primary brain tumor. Despite the available multimodal treatment strategies, prognosis is usually poor, and the median overall survival is approximately 14 months. Although in its infancy, stem cell-based therapies have produced promising results in preclinical models of glioblastoma. Here, we aim to review the current knowledge on stem cells and glioblastoma, discuss available treatments, and address examples of stem cell-based approaches for glioblastoma therapy.
