The scientific legacy of Fermi in particle physics

2004
The year 2001 will mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Enrico Fermi. Fermi was a physicist of spectacular achievements with many lasting contributions despite his untimely death at the age of 53. As Pais said in his book “Inward bound”: “Physics thus lost one of its great figures, a man at home in the instrument shop, in the laboratory and in theoretical physics.... His teaching inspired two generations on two continents. ” Particle physicists can hardly spend a day without referring to fermions, to distances measured in fermis or to something else bearing the name of Fermi. His legacy is overwhelming.
