Autism, Adverse Events, and Trauma

2021
ABSTRACT Clinical and scientific data show a higher risk of adverse events and trauma in people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These experiences are, however, often undiagnosed and untreated in autism. Diagnosing trauma- and autism-related symptoms is complicated due to the overlap between these two. Several pitfalls and points of attention can be mentioned. This chapter highlights the importance of recognizing trauma-related symptoms at an early phase and start of trauma treatment. It also provides an overview of the current knowledge about the feasibility and effectiveness of treatment of trauma-related symptoms in people with ASD. Simultaneous training of self- and emotion regulation skills, taking into account autistic features, is recommended.
