Badenian Tectono-sedimentary Evolution in the Moravian Part of the Vienna Basin

2011
Examples of practical use of 3D seismic data for the geological and exploration purposes in the Moravian part of the Vienna basin are presented here. The attention is focused on the Badenian depositional systems, tectonics and their relations, as well as on the identification of new potential hydrocarbon traps. Based on seismic data interpretation and seismic attribute analysis depositional facies were identified and as examples are presented channels, lithotamnium biostromes and deltaic facies. Study of depositional facies, tectonics and their combination has shown that the Upper Badenian and younger horizontal displacement along 2 main fault systems in the study area (the Steinberg fault and the Lanzhot-Hrusky fault) can be excluded. Results of the 3D seismic data analysis contributed to better understanding of the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the study area and number of new prospects was proposed. Two exploration wells of the new prospects discovered 220 MMCM of recoverable gas reserves and has proved the possibility of a successful application of 3D seismic data interpretation.
